How to password-protect a PDF
Upload a PDF, choose a password and confirm it, and optionally block printing, copying or editing. The encrypted copy downloads straight away and asks for the password whenever it's opened.
Encryption strength
Files are encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption. Restrictions such as 'no printing' are enforced by well-behaved PDF software but are weaker than the password itself, so rely on the password for real security.
Frequently asked questions
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens inside your browser on your own device, so your files never leave your computer and there is no file-size limit imposed by a server. Very large files are limited only by your device's memory.
What if I forget the password?
It can't be recovered — not by us (we never see it) and realistically not by anyone else. Store it in a password manager.
Is my password sent anywhere?
No. The encryption runs on your device using qpdf compiled to WebAssembly, so neither your file nor your password leaves your browser.
