Three common percentage questions

This calculator covers the three questions people usually mean by "percentage calculator": finding a percentage of a number, finding what percent one number is of another, and finding the percentage change between two numbers. Pick the mode that matches your question above.

How percentage change is calculated

Percentage change is (new − old) ÷ |old| × 100. A positive result means an increase, a negative result means a decrease. This is the same formula used for things like tracking a price change, a salary raise, or year-over-year growth.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage increase?

Use the "% increase / decrease" mode above: enter the original value as "From" and the new value as "To". The result is the percentage change between them — positive for an increase, negative for a decrease.

What's the difference between percentage points and percent?

If a rate moves from 10% to 15%, that's a change of 5 percentage points, but a 50% percentage increase relative to the original 10%. The two describe the same change differently — mixing them up is a common source of confusion in news headlines.

Can a percentage change be negative?

Yes — a negative result in the "% increase / decrease" mode simply means the value went down.
