What's a normal tip?
Tipping norms vary a lot by country and setting, but as a rough guide in the US: 15% is on the low end for adequate service, 18–20% is standard for good service, and 20%+ is generous. For counter service or takeout, a smaller tip or none at all is common.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Conventions vary, but tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is common practice. Enter whichever bill amount you'd like the tip calculated on.
What if the service was bad?
A tip is discretionary — it's reasonable to tip less than the presets shown, or adjust the slider down, for below-average service.
How do I split a tip unevenly between people?
This calculator assumes an equal split. For an uneven split, use the total tip and total bill figures shown and divide them manually according to what each person ordered.
